Europe has 47 sovereign countries, including transcontinental states like Russia and Turkey. This count also includes microstates such as Vatican City, Monaco, and San Marino. Of these, 27 are members of the European Union.
Russia's European portion is the largest at 3,960,000 km² (1,528,560 sq mi). If counting only countries entirely within Europe, France and Ukraine are among the largest. The total area of Europe is 9,938,000 km² (3,837,083 sq mi).
Vatican City is the smallest country in Europe and the world at just 0.44 km² (0.17 sq mi). It is an independent city-state surrounded entirely by Rome, Italy. Other European microstates include Monaco, San Marino, and Liechtenstein.
By population within European borders, Russia leads with approximately 110 million people living west of the Ural Mountains. Germany is the most populous country located entirely in Europe with approximately 83 million residents. Major cities include Berlin, Munich, Moscow, and Saint Petersburg.
Vatican City is the least populated country in Europe with around 800 residents. It serves as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and the residence of the Pope. Despite its tiny population, it attracts millions of visitors each year.
Europe is home to iconic landmarks across many countries. The Eiffel Tower is in Paris, France; the Colosseum is in Rome, Italy; the Acropolis stands in Athens, Greece; and Big Ben is in London, United Kingdom. Spain has the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and Croatia features the UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park.
Europe is a continent with 47 sovereign countries, while the European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states. The EU has its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. Related groupings include the Schengen Area (25 EU countries plus non-EU members like Iceland and Norway) and the Eurozone (21 EU countries sharing the euro currency).
The Alps are Europe's most prominent mountain range, stretching 1,200 km across 8 countries including France, Switzerland, Italy, and Austria. Mt. Elbrus in Russia is Europe's highest peak at 5,642 m (18,510 ft). Europe also features major peninsulas including the Iberian (Spain and Portugal), Italian, and Scandinavian (Norway, Sweden, Finland) peninsulas.
Europe spans from UTC-1 in the Azores (Portugal) to UTC+5 in eastern European Russia. Most of central and western Europe operates in UTC+1 (CET) or UTC+2 (CEST during summer). This wide range means there is a 6-hour difference between Europe's western and eastern extremes.
