Service area maps made in Ultimaps

Three real maps for three different jobs. Each one opens in Studio with the same areas colored, so you can swap in your own counties or states.

HVAC service area map of Georgia: five named core counties around Atlanta in dark orange as the standard area, eleven surrounding counties in light orange as the extended trip-fee area, highways for context and a pin for the Marietta shop

HVAC contractor around Atlanta

Standard and trip-fee counties around the shop, with the shop itself as a pin. Made on the Georgia county map.

What goes on a service area map

A good service area map answers one question for the reader: do you cover me, and how? These are the parts that answer it, and each one is a real control in Ultimaps Studio.

The areas you serve

Counties for a regional provider, states for national coverage, ZIP code areas for a dense metro. Real borders from public boundary data, so nothing is traced by hand.

Service levels in the legend

Primary and extended, same-day and next-day, or one color per crew or weekday. Each level is a legend item with its own color.

Your offices and bases

Add pins by address, by clicking the map or by pasting a list. Label them, color them and pick an icon.

A title and legend that travel with it

Both are part of the exported file, so a slide or a flyer needs no separate legend.

Hover and click on your website

Published maps show a tooltip for each county and can link each county or office to its own page.

How to create a service area map

Pick your state's county map, import the counties you serve or click them in, add your offices, then download or embed. It takes a few minutes.

  1. Open your state's county map

Pick your state in the state picker and Studio opens its county map. For national coverage, start from the US states map instead.
  2. Import your list

Choose Import Data and upload a CSV, Excel or TSV file, or link a Google Sheet or Notion table. A second column such as Primary or Extended becomes the legend, one color per level.
  3. Or click the counties in

For a quick map, pick a color and click counties with the Bucket Fill tool. Name the color in the legend.
  4. Add your offices as pins

Type or paste addresses and Studio places the pins. Address lookups count against a monthly allowance: 100 free, 5,000 on Pro.
  5. Add a title, then export or publish

Download a PNG or a PDF for print, or publish the map and embed it on your website.

County, state or ZIP code: which map fits your service area

Use the unit your customers think in. Most regional providers map counties, national businesses map states, and metro delivery services map ZIP code areas.

Counties

Best for
Home health, hospice, utilities, nonprofits and regional contractors.
Base map
The county map of any of the 50 states.
Good to know
A common choice for regional providers.

States

Best for
National or multi-state distributors, dealers and agencies.
Base map
US states, or the US and Canada together.
Good to know
Fewest regions, so it is the fastest to make.

ZIP code areas

Best for
Dense metro delivery and same-day zones.
Base map
Each state's ZIP code map, plus a national 3-digit prefix map.
Good to know
Census ZCTAs, which approximate USPS ZIP codes. Not official delivery boundaries.
Metro Atlanta ZIP code map: inner ZIP areas shaded dark blue for same-day service and outer ones light blue for next-day, with county lines, highways and city names

Metro Atlanta by ZIP code area. ZIP code areas are Census ZCTAs, an approximation of USPS ZIP codes.

Serving by ZIP code instead?

Delivery and same-day services often run on ZIP codes rather than counties. Paste your list into the free ZIP code map maker and it colors each ZIP code area, with a second column for the service level. The link below opens it with the Atlanta list from this map already pasted in. Browse every state's map on the ZIP code maps page.

Add a service area map to your website

Most service area maps end up on an “areas we serve” page. Publish the map from Studio and paste the embed code into your site, or paste the share link into WordPress, Notion, Ghost or Substack, where it expands into an interactive map.

  • Visitors hover a county and see a tooltip with its name and service level.
  • Each county or office pin can link to its own location page.

Publishing needs a free account. Free embeds carry small Ultimaps attribution.

For proposals, decks and print

Most service area maps get printed or dropped into a document: the grant report, the RFP response, the board deck, the truck wrap, the trade-show banner. The title and legend are part of the file, so the map explains itself wherever it lands. PDF and SVG are vector files, so county lines and labels stay sharp at poster size.

Who makes service area maps

Service area and “counties we serve” maps come from care providers, food banks, state agencies, contractors and distributors. Anyone who covers a set of places and has to show it.

Home health, hospice and community care

The counties you're licensed or staffed to serve, for referral partners and for your own website.

Home services and contractors

HVAC, plumbing, pest control, cleaning and roofing. Standard versus trip-fee areas, on your website.

Nonprofits, food banks and agencies

The counties-we-serve map for the grant application, the annual report and the board deck.

Utilities, co-ops and public services

A clean picture of your service territory for a report, a rate filing appendix or a public page.

Distributors and dealers

States or counties by delivery day or warehouse. Splitting areas between reps instead? See sales territory maps.

Ultimaps compared with Google My Maps, radius tools and Google Business Profile

Most tools that call themselves a service area map generator draw a circle or a hand-traced shape on a street map. Here is how the options differ for a map you show people.

Service area map questions

A service area map shows the places a business, agency or nonprofit serves. Usually that means shaded counties or states, a legend that explains the shading, and pins for offices or bases. You find them on "areas we serve" pages, in proposals and RFP responses, in grant and annual reports, and on flyers, vehicles and trade-show banners. Unlike a circle drawn around an address, a service area map follows boundaries your customers already know, such as their county or their state. A reader can find their own county and see at a glance whether you cover it, and at which level, for example primary or extended service.

Open your state's county map in Ultimaps Studio, or the US states map for national coverage. Import the list of areas you serve from a CSV, Excel or TSV file, a Google Sheet or a Notion table. If the list has a second column such as Primary or Extended, each value becomes a legend item with its own color. For a quick map you can also click counties in with the Bucket Fill tool. Then add your offices as pins by address, give the map a title, and download a PNG or a PDF, or publish it and embed it on your website. Most maps take a few minutes. You can start without signing up, and a free account saves the map to your workspace.

Yes. Ultimaps is free to start: make as many maps as you like and download a standard PNG with a small "Made with ultimaps.com" credit. Publishing a map and embedding it on your website is free too, with attribution. When you need a clean file, a one-time export costs €12.50 ($14.90 in the US) for one map. It is a 24-hour pass that gives you PNG, SVG and PDF without the credit, at twice the resolution, with commercial use included. Pro costs €49 a month and removes the credit from every map, with SVG and PDF on all of them, templates, and 5,000 address lookups a month for pins.

Pick the unit your customers think in. Counties suit most regional providers, such as home health agencies, contractors and nonprofits, and they are the most common choice. States suit national or multi-state coverage and are the quickest to make. ZIP code areas suit dense metro delivery and same-day zones. Note that ZIP code areas on any map, ours included, are Census ZCTAs, which approximate USPS ZIP codes but are not official delivery boundaries. Every US state has both a county map and a ZIP code map in Ultimaps. If your list is ZIP codes, the free ZIP code map maker colors them from a pasted list and can open the result in Studio.

Not in Studio. Ultimaps colors whole counties, states and ZIP code areas, and it does not draw circles or drive-time zones. If your service area is defined as "within 25 miles", draw that circle in the free map radius tool. It lists every ZIP code inside the circle, and one click opens that list in the ZIP code map maker, which colors the real ZIP code areas. The result follows boundaries your customers recognize instead of a circle that cuts through neighborhoods. From there you can take the map into Studio to add a legend, office pins and a title.

Save the map with a free account, publish it, and copy the embed code into your page. In WordPress, Notion, Ghost or Substack you can also paste the share link on its own line and it expands into an interactive map. Visitors can hover a county to see a tooltip, such as the county name and its service level, and click through to a location page if you add links to counties or office pins. Free embeds carry small Ultimaps attribution.

Yes. In Import Data, upload a CSV, TSV or Excel file, or link a Google Sheet or a Notion table. County names and FIPS codes are matched automatically, and a review step shows what matched before anything is applied. A text column, such as Primary or Extended, becomes the legend, and a column of hex codes sets exact colors. The import is a one-time copy rather than a live sync, so re-import the sheet when your list changes. Re-importing updates the map and keeps your manual edits. For ZIP codes, format the column as text so the leading zeros survive.

They do different jobs. The service area in your Google Business Profile tells Google where you work, which affects where you appear in local search and on Google Maps. It does not put a map on your website or give you a file. A service area map is the picture you show people, on your areas-we-serve page, in a proposal or on a flyer. Use both. Set your service area in Google Business Profile for search, and make a map in Ultimaps for your website and documents. Ultimaps does not change your search ranking and does not connect to your Google profile.
