About This Tool

Our free county lookup tool helps you quickly find out which US county you're in based on your GPS location or address.

The tool uses OpenStreetMap data to provide reliable location information including county, city, state, and coordinates. Simply allow GPS access for instant results, or manually enter any address to look up its county.

Search by street address, city, or five-digit ZIP code. The search covers the United States only. Plenty of US ZIP codes are also postcodes somewhere else (90210 exists in Ukraine, 33101 in Finland), so limiting the search takes you straight to the American one with nothing to pick between.

You get back the unit that applies where you are. Louisiana returns a parish. Alaska returns a borough or a census area.

How Many Counties Are in Each State?

Open any state to view, color and download its county map. Not every state calls them counties. Louisiana has parishes. Alaska has boroughs and census areas. Each row shows the unit that state uses.

The counts add up to 3,101 county areas across these 50 maps. They cover counties, parishes, boroughs and census areas. They leave out independent cities, which sit outside any county (Virginia has 38, plus Baltimore, St. Louis and Carson City), so a few states have a little more than the number you see here.

Frequently Asked Questions

The county lookup uses OpenStreetMap data through the Nominatim API, which provides highly accurate location data. When using GPS, accuracy depends on your device and signal strength. Address searches are typically accurate to the street level.

GPS location requires browser permission. Make sure you've allowed location access when prompted. If it still doesn't work, check your browser settings or device location services. Alternatively, you can manually enter your address.

No. All location lookups happen directly in your browser and are sent only to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim API for geocoding. We do not store, track, or share your location data.

Yes! Simply enter a new address or use the GPS button again to look up a different location. The map will update with the new location information.

If the county information is incorrect, it may be due to incomplete data in OpenStreetMap for your specific location. Try entering a more specific address or nearby landmark to get better results.

Type the five-digit ZIP code into the search box and press Search. The search covers US locations only, so a ZIP that also exists as a postcode abroad goes straight to the American one without asking you to choose. You get the county plus the city, state and coordinates for that ZIP.

Yes. ZIP codes are mail delivery routes, not administrative areas, and several thousand of them cross county lines. The lookup returns the county that contains the main point of the ZIP code area. If your ZIP straddles a boundary, search a specific street address instead.

The District of Columbia is a federal district and has no counties, so the lookup tells you that instead of guessing. Louisiana has 64 parishes and Alaska has 30 boroughs and census areas. Both count as counties for this purpose, and the tool reports whichever one applies. Independent cities like Richmond, Baltimore, St. Louis and Carson City sit outside any county, and OpenStreetMap has no county recorded for them.
