California has 1,802 ZIP code areas spread across 57 three-digit prefixes, more than any other state and nearly double the 29 that Ohio manages with a similar population density. No city dominates them: Los Angeles has 66, San Diego 41, and San Francisco, Sacramento and San Jose come in between 28 and 29 each, so the five largest places together hold only 10.7% of the state.
