Florida has 1,013 ZIP code areas on this map. That figure counts ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which are the Census Bureau's drawn approximation of each ZIP code, and it is the number of shapes you can click, sort and color here. USPS quotes a higher number for Florida, because its count includes ZIP codes with no area to draw: those used only for PO boxes, those assigned to a single large building or organisation, and military mail codes. Nationally about one delivery ZIP code in eight has no boundary for that reason, so it exists in address databases but appears on no map.

Florida ZIP codes use 25 three-digit prefixes, in six separate runs: 320 to 331, 333 to 339, 341 to 342, 344, 346 to 347, and 349. The first three digits identify the mail processing facility serving everything beneath them, so the prefix is a rough guide to region. The 320s and 322s cover Jacksonville, 328s and 347s Orlando, 331s and 332s Miami, and 336s Tampa. Unusually, the five prefixes missing from the middle of that span carry no ZIP areas anywhere in the United States, not just none in Florida. Those are 332, 340, 343, 345 and 348. Twenty-five prefixes for 1,013 ZIP areas works out at about 40 codes per prefix.

Miami, with 56 ZIP code areas. Orlando follows with 34, Jacksonville with 33, then Fort Lauderdale and Tampa with 27 each and Saint Petersburg with 16. Together the five largest account for 17.5% of the state's 1,013 ZIP areas, which is a higher concentration than Texas or California show but well short of a single dominant centre. Note that the place name attached to a ZIP code is the postal name, not a city boundary: a ZIP listed as Miami often sits outside Miami's city limits, because the postal name records which post office serves the address. Miami-Dade County as a whole holds 80 of the state's ZIP areas, more than any other county.

Florida ZIP codes run from 32003 to 34997. The low end sits in Clay County south of Jacksonville, and the high end on the Treasure Coast near Stuart, but the range is not a north-to-south walk: Florida's prefixes were assigned in blocks that jump around the state, so sorting the table by ZIP code moves between the panhandle, central Florida and the south coast rather than travelling in a line. The span also contains five prefixes with no ZIP areas at all, so the 1,013 codes are spread across a numeric range considerably wider than their count suggests. Sorted by land area instead, the same table runs from 1,173 square miles at Homestead down to seven thousandths of a square mile at Homosassa.

Because a USPS ZIP code is a set of delivery stops along carrier routes rather than an area, and some have no meaningful area at all. A ZIP assigned to one office building, one used only for PO boxes at a post office counter, or a military APO or FPO code has no territory to draw, so the Census Bureau creates no ZIP Code Tabulation Area for it and it appears on no map, this one included. Florida shows this more clearly than most states: five whole prefixes inside its range have no drawable ZIP areas anywhere in the country, those being 332, 340, 343, 345 and 348.

No, and no ZIP code boundary anywhere is official. The Postal Service does not publish ZIP codes as polygons, because it does not maintain them as areas at all. These 1,013 shapes are Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, as every ZIP map's are: each one is assembled from the census blocks whose addresses mostly share that ZIP code. The fit is close in Miami or Tampa and much looser across the Everglades and the interior. Use these boundaries as a geographic reference, never as a legal one: they are not property lines, city limits, tax districts, school zones, voting districts, emergency response areas or official USPS delivery boundaries.
