Georgia has 751 ZIP code areas on this map. The figure counts ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, the Census Bureau's drawn approximation of each ZIP code, and it is the number of shapes you can click, sort and color here. USPS quotes a higher number for Georgia, because its count includes ZIP codes with no area to draw: those used only for PO boxes, those assigned to a single large building or organisation, and military mail codes. Nationally about one delivery ZIP code in eight has no boundary for that reason, so it appears in address databases but on no map. Georgia's 751 areas are spread across 159 counties.

Georgia uses 20 three-digit prefixes: 300 through 310, 312 through 319, and 398. The first three digits identify the mail processing facility serving everything beneath them, so the prefix is a rough regional guide. 303 is Atlanta, 305 the northeast, 310 and 312 Macon and the centre, 314 Savannah and 317 the southwest. Georgia's ZIP codes span 30002 to 39897 on paper, but most of that range is not Georgia at all: 320 to 349 is Florida, 350 to 369 Alabama, 370 to 385 Tennessee and 386 to 397 Mississippi. Georgia ZIP codes run from 30002 to 39897, but that span is misleading, because Georgia only uses 20 of the prefixes inside it. The state's own blocks are 300 to 310, 312 to 319, and 398. Everything between 320 and 397 belongs to Florida, Alabama, Tennessee or Mississippi. Sorting the table on this page by ZIP code therefore starts around Atlanta, works south and east, and finishes with a single prefix in the far southwest. Sorted by land area instead, the same 751 rows run from 545 square miles around Folkston down to one hundredth of a square mile at Funston.

Because a USPS ZIP code is a set of delivery stops along carrier routes, not an area, and some have no meaningful area at all. A ZIP assigned to a single office building, one used only for PO boxes at a post office counter, or a military APO or FPO code has no territory to draw, so the Census Bureau creates no ZIP Code Tabulation Area for it and it appears on no map, including this one. In Georgia the whole 311 prefix is in that position: numbers in use, with nothing to shade. Nationally about 4,800 delivery ZIP codes have no boundary, roughly one in eight.
