Frequently Asked Questions

Andorra is divided into 7 parishes (parròquies): Andorra la Vella, Canillo, Encamp, Escaldes-Engordany, La Massana, Ordino, and Sant Julià de Lòria. There were only six parishes until 1978, when Escaldes-Engordany was created as the seventh.

Canillo is the largest parish by area, covering approximately 121 km² in the northeastern part of Andorra. Despite its size, it is one of the least populated parishes, with only about 4,325 residents.

Andorra la Vella, which is also the country's capital, is the most populated parish with around 22,440 residents (2019). It is also the smallest by area at just 12 km².

Each parish has its own ISO 3166-2 code: AD-07 (Andorra la Vella), AD-02 (Canillo), AD-03 (Encamp), AD-08 (Escaldes-Engordany), AD-04 (La Massana), AD-05 (Ordino), and AD-06 (Sant Julià de Lòria).

Yes. Some parishes have further subdivisions: Ordino, La Massana, and Sant Julià de Lòria are split into quarts (quarters), while Canillo is divided into 10 veïnats (neighborhoods). All parishes also contain villages that largely align with these subdivisions.

Each parish is administered by a local government called a comú, led by an elected mayor who oversees local affairs. The parishes operate alongside Andorra's national government, which is uniquely headed by two co-princes — the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell.
